Crocheting the Hyperbolic Plane:
A conversation on non-euclidean geometry and feminine handicraft
by Dr. Daina Taimina and IFF Director Margaret Wertheim [IFF-L10]

Sunday, August 7 @ 4pm - 7pm
A hands-on workshop on how to crochet
hyperbolic planes and pseudospheres

At Machine Project Echo Park / Los Angeles
1200 D North Alvarado Street
Los Angeles, CA 90026

In conjunction with the exhibition Crocheting the Hyperbolic Plane, IFF Director Margaret Wertheim will host a conversation with Dr. Daina Taimina, the Cornell University mathematician who discovered how to crochet hyperbolic surfaces. A discussion ranging from the evolution of non-euclidean geometry, to the sociology of feminine handicrafts and the finer points of crochet, the event will cap the successful season of this whimsical exhibition.

Daina Taimina is the co-author (along with David Henderson) of Experiencing Geometry a classic text on euclidean and non-euclidean space. Her work on crocheting hyperbolic surfaces has helped to inspire a worldwide movement of "math-craft" and her models have been acquired by many mathematics departments as pedagogical tools. They are also included in the Smithsonian's American Mathematical Model collection and in the exhibition Not the Knitting You Know at Eleven Eleven Gallery in Washington DC. Dr. Taimina teaches at Cornell and is currently working on a book about hyperbolic geometry and crochet.

In the afternoon prior to the Lecture (4-7 pm), Machine Project will host a hands-on workshop about crocheting hyperbolic planes and pseudospheres. The workshop will be led by Dr Taimina and assisted by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the IFF. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn from the inventor herself. Experienced crocheters and beginners alike are welcome, and instruction will be given in crochet basics. Crochet hooks and wool will be supplied - and you are also welcome to bring your own favorite yarns.
