Crochet Reef Workshops and Lectures

Crocheters at workshop at NYU - bringing into being the New York Reef.
As part of the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project the IFF hosts workshops and lectures to teach the techniques of hyperbolic crochet and to introduce the reef project to interested citizens. Workshops have been held in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Rancho Cucamonga, and other cities. Crocheters at all levels of experience are welcome, from first-time novices to experienced experts. No prior crochet skill is required - though if you are skilled you'll pick up the possibilities quickly. Workshops are conducted by IFF reef-wranglers-in-chief, Margaret Wertheim and Christine Wertheim. Generally the afternoon begins with a brief talk introducing the subject of hyperbolic geometry and its manifestations in the marine world. We proceed from there to learn the craft of hyperbolic crochet, originally discovered by mathematician Dr. Daina Taimina at Cornell University. As the afternoon progresses participants begin to make their own models and to explore the endless variations this technique allows. Above was a model made by Anitra Menning, a young LA photographer who came to a workshop in 2006. Anitra had never crocheted before but she quickly developed her own distinct style. Anitra crochets tighter than anyone we have ever seen and that simple technical aberation leads to models of an almost architectural stiffness and grace. All participants are encouraged to explore their own creative directions and we are continually amazed at the innovations our crafters come up with.

A crochet reef workshop in conjunction with the creation of The Chicago Reef, at Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Chicago.

In 2007 the Reef Project took a most welcome turn when we were invited to exhibit the whole Crochet Reef at the Chicago Cultural Center. The exhibition was held in conjunction with the Chicago Festival of the Humanities and the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. Over the months leading up to the exhibition opening, Hull-House co- ordinated a series of workshops across Chicago which ultimately engaged more than 100 Windy City crafters from all walks of life. The results of their efforts was the Chicago Reef, which also went on display at the Cultural Center. In 2008, work is currently under way to bring into being a New York Reef, an effort that is being spearheaded by the New York Institute of the Humanities, the New York Crochet Guild, and the Harlem Knitting Circle. Workshops will be held around New York city in early March 2008 and the New York Reef itself will be exhibited along with the IFF Reef at two exhibitions opening in April - at NYU's "Broadway Windows" and at the World Financial Center's "Winter Gardens".
